Westerville's Communications staff brings many years of emergency, police, fire and medical service dispatching experience to Westerville residents and visitors. The need for the very best emergency dispatching service is not lost on anyone who has ever had to dial 9-1-1. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, the Communications Section is ready to assist in city emergencies. This staff responds to more than 70,000 calls for emergency service annually.
The primary purpose of the Communications Section is to provide professional and responsive dispatch communications services to all City Public Safety forces and all other City departments during non-business hours. The mission of the Communications Section is to provide an efficient combined 9-1-1 Communications Center that is quick to respond to the Divisions of Police, Fire, Public Service and the community in general. Other duties include tracking all police and fire service vehicles, and providing driving records and criminal history checks to police officers. The continual goal for Communications employees is to dispatch a priority one, life threatening call for service within one minute of receiving it.
The City of Westerville partners with other Franklin and Delaware County law enforcement and fire agencies. Through a mutual aid agreement, Westerville staff will respond to emergencies in neighboring jurisdictions upon request, in return, these neighboring communities will respond to Westerville emergencies whenever necessary.
