The Westerville Youth Public Safety Academy (WYPSA) is an annual program developed for local students who have an interest in law enforcement and fire/EMS. Participation requires students to be at least 14-years-old AND have completed the 8th grade. The classes run from 4-9 p.m. each day and will be held at the Westerville Justice Center (229 Huber Village Blvd) or Fire Station 111 (400 W Main St).

During this one-week course, students learn basic law enforcement and firefighting principles, including:
  • Hiring Process
  • Officer/Firefighter Training
  • Uniform & Equipment
  • Careers in Criminal Justice/Fire 
  • Building Searches
  • Traffic Stops
  • Demonstrations by our K-9 officer and DTU (Delaware Tactical Unit)
  • Water Movement
  • Drone Demonstration
  • Public Safety Cadet Program
  • Tours of the Police/Fire Departments 

Graduates may then apply to join the Public Safety Cadet Post #6709, a youth program conducted by the Westerville Division of Police & Fire. This pre-professional program offers extended hands on training in public safety, with an emphasis on community service.
